WORST EVENT I HANDLE ( by MUHAMMAD IMRAN DME43B ALAM019113)

 


 


 

My name is MUHAMMAD IMRAN , this story about my worst experience handling an event. For information when its holiday season I usually work at SHERATON HOTEL, almost everyday I work there. So the boss in banquet department known me well enough. Because of my good reputation and my quality of work I got the title as captain event I only a part timer. The salary is also good there, and that the reason I`m able to work there every single day. So when my name being well known in this banquet department I will bear responsible for new worker. I need to teach them how we running the work here, guide them until they familiar with the hotel environment and routine of this hotel. After I got my boss trust, when the event come he start entrusting me to handle the event, starting from layout of the table until the preparation while event is going on. usually I can handle it but there a one that I can remember clearly until today. When I recall it, it happened during Chinese new year, as we know Chinese people usually get married on this date. As we know when Chinese person capable running the wedding event at the hotel they will make it grand like a celebrity wedding. So on that day I need to handle that kind of event.

       


  My first problem occurs at the beginning before the event started, I usually get into work at 10am in the morning. So when I got to work we usually have briefing session before we start working. When we start the briefing, I can`t see the regular part time face. My boss told me that regular part timer having difficult to come on that day, so I need to teach new part timer on the important day. Most of the new part timer that I need to handle don`t understand English, because of most of them came from Bangladesh. I just be creative and most of time use hand language while explaining task to them. The event start at 6pm , the beginning of the event is serving the drinks and canape before they can enter grand ballroom at 7pm. Because of most of them new and can`t speak well in English I need to do extra work for example show the guest where the bathroom, get the toothpick, top up the drinks and canape. It supposed the work of other part timer to handle every task but because of lack in experience and communication the responsibility fall to me.

         


 After that problem another one occurs. So at 6.45pm, before the grand ballroom open to the guest, we have final briefing to determine what we serve, the menu, who in charge for every section of the ballroom. I need to handle the farthest part of the ballroom, I don`t have problem with that. My concern is there are many new part timer in my part that handling the table. Every single person have their own table number that they need to be serve. When the event started and the guest rush to get in, we already prepared in each table that being given by our boss. At 7pm we start by serving drinks to the guest, my table is under control everyone happy with my service, suddenly the guest from table besides me call me. They ask me to serve them drinks, I look around to find the new part time that in charge for the table but nowhere to be seen. So I just go and pick up the bottle of refill drinks for that table. Before I can start pouring the drinks, the guest from other table also calling for me, in few minutes I need to handle around 5 table when I supposed to handle 1 table at time. At the end I go at backline and saw them doing others person job. this is very unacceptable, I scold them and tell them to guard their own table nicely.

           


After speech from the bride and the family members, we need to serve the food to them. This is another nightmare for me, we start with appetizer. As experience worker here, I can carry more than 5 plate of food in oval trey so usually whole table can get the food on time. When I start serving them the appetizers, the other table calling for me again, they complain that only half of them got the food and the other not. I`m rushing to backline looking for them, It`s not surprise anymore when I saw all of them carry the plate of appetizer one by one, this is too slow for food service. When hotel doing Chinese set dinner, it always have time for one dish to another, if the food late to serve it will collide with another food. I need to running around like crazy person asking table by table if they already got all their food, and close the hole that new part timer made because of their not well with the menu. The event running until 10pm, at that time it`s already dissert being serve. The guest starting to go home, one by one left the ballroom. My table also clear and nothing left behind. My only regret is I told one of guest that I can`t satisfy all of they needs because of we lack of worker at the time. 

           


 Lastly aftermath of the event. When the event come to an end, our boss call us all for cleaning briefing. As usual before we start our last task, my boss will give the overall comment and the guest complain. That night my boss said everything is alright only a few table their food was late, in my heart said: if it`s not me who cover their table it will be more complain. So after the briefing we need to clean inside the ballroom , arrange the table for another event and clean the back line. But as usual the the new comer always make everything hard for me, they only do half the work and all of them go back before the time leaving me all their work. At the end I need to finish their work and end up going back late. When the time I need to get my payment, my boss ask me how today work. I told him everything about what happened and he told me, after this he will only accept them if it`s last choice. The conclusion I can state from overall this event is, you can`t run the event by yourself, doesn`t matter how experience you are , you still need many man power but the man power also need to be honest in working and try their best not to burden others because when we work we need to be professional and fast to catchup with environment, when we do all that we will get the trust from our superior , then we can easily promoted and being entrusted.
